Condition
The painting was relined. The matter is thin in some areas and the surface presents small wears, probably due to the relining.
Under UV light, small repaints appear scattered on the surface and alongside the borders of the composition. A few retouches are visible on Napoléon's right sleeve, shoulders and on his hair. Some old repaints are also visible, especially in the lower part on the pants and small ones on Napoléon's forehead.

Ce portrait à mi-jambes de l'empereur Napoléon III est une réplique d'après le grand portrait officiel de l'Empereur executé par Winterhalter en 1853 et présenté à l'Exposition Universelle de 1855.
Il en existe plusieurs répliques, notamment à Compiègne et à Versailles.
La couronne placée sur un coussin à gauche de la composition originale et le paysage sur la droite, sont absents de notre tableau qui présente l'Empereur en plan beaucoup plus rapproché.
