Catalogue Note

“The ‘Cold Mountain’ prints, named after the celebrated Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty, are composed of four couplets of five characters each, arranged vertically on the page (164). The prints have an affinity with [Jackson] Pollock, whose looping, rhythmic gestures were an inspiration to Marden. The prints were made in tandem with the series of six ‘Cold Mountain’ paintings exhibited at Dia Center for the Arts, New York in 1989.
