The portfolio, comprising 82 (of the 100) etchings with hand-colouring by the artist, this set lacking the second suite of 100 etchings, 1952, signed in black ink on the justification, numbered 47, from the total edition of 200, also signed in blue ink on the title page and dedicated 'Pour Dominique Cazenave en bon souvenir/Marc Chagall/1959 Paris - Vence[?]', with text by Jean de La Fontaine, loose (as issued), on Rives BKF paper, published by Tériade, Paris, in two volumes contained in the original paper covers, each with an etching on the cover, and dark grey paper-covered boards
Condition
With full margins, a deckle edge at right and bottom, in good condition apart from pale paper discoloration, time-staining at the sheet edges, Plate 51 with a short (15mm) tear at centre lower sheet edge. The plates removed from the boards and wrapped separately. Lacking plates 5, 9, 17, 22, 23, 25, 27, 28, 41, 45, 48, 49, 53, 55, 68, 98, 99, 100. The original boards with an occasional stain, discoloration and wear, the cover of volume one separated and re-attached with tape.
