Catalogue Note

Woll notes that this etching is in reverse of a painting of the same subject, dated 1885. The model for the figure at left was Karl Jensen-Hjell, a Norwegian painter. The horizontal swirls of smoke are areas of the plate not inked and serve as a compositional device to connect the two figures as well as a hypnotic effect for the female figure and the viewer.
