Condition

This photograph is in generally very good condition. The print is trimmed to the image and, along the left edge, there is an isolated 1/8-inch area where the emulsion is folded back slightly. In high raking light, a few small superficial surface scratches are visible overall, none of which appear to break the emulsion.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.

Catalogue Note

The photographs in Lots 81-83 are from some of W. Eugene Smith’s most arresting photo essays of the 1950s.  A frequent contributor to LIFE and other news magazines beginning in the 1930s, Smith wrote, ‘My station in life is to capture the action of life, the life of the world, its humor, its tragedies, in other words, life as it is’ (Johnson back cover).
