Description
- Peter Beard
- Orphaned Cheetah Cubs, Mweiga, Kenya
- gelatin silver print with collage
a unique oversized object, signed in ink on the image and illustrated extensively with paint and colored inks, two keys on a wire hoop, a feather, shed snake skin, two matchbooks from Amaranth restaurant, and photographs collaged on the image and in the margin, framed, 1968, printed circa 2000
Provenance
The photographer to the present owner, circa 2000
Condition
Although this print has not been examined out of the frame, it appears to be in generally excellent condition. As with other large collages by this photographer, there are several small creases and tears, and a generally uneven surface that likely occurred during creation of this object. There is a 3-inch tear along the lower margin edge that does not affect the image. The surface is uneven, likely from the paint, ink and glues that were used by the photographer. There is a very tiny area of paint transference from the surface onto the frame's plexiglas in the upper left quadrant.
There is a profusion of colorful illustration and collaged elements in the margins. There are numerous black-and-white and color photographic and reprographic images of hunting scenes collaged in the margins. A snakeskin is affixed to the lower right corner of the image.
The photograph is annotated on the image: 'No one dreamed that the game could ever be depleted by a handful of immigrants- with maps and gunpowder- and yet, within a matter of years, this paradise would become of the modern world. . . As Fitzgerald wrote of another paradise, ". . .for a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder." (From The End of the Game / Last word from Paradise) Peter Beard Hog Ranch Box 4191 Nairobi, Kenya'.
