Description

  • Berenice Abbott
  • New York at Night
  • gelatin silver print
mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, the photographer's Maine studio stamp on the reverse, 1932, printed later (Steidl, Vol. II, cover, frontispiece, and p. 35)

Condition

This print is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, the following are visible: scattered tiny deposits of original retouching; a 2-and-1/2-inch sharp linear crease in the upper portion; a 2-inch diagonal raised area in the lower right quadrant; and a few scattered impressions. None of these appear to break the emulsion, nor do they detract from the overall fine appearance of this print. There is minor wear and edge chipping. There are a few scattered deposits of indeterminate nature on the mount, and its upper corners are gently bumped. Upon very close examination, the mounting tissue is very slightly visible along the left and right edges. There is minor soiling on the reverse of the mount. There are linen tape remnants along the upper edge on the reverse.
