Condition
Original canvas. There is a pressure mark to the grey shape at the left vertical edge, and the canvas undulates very slightly in places, but otherwise the canvas appears sound. There are slight stretcher lines visible in places, most apparent along the lower horizontal edge. There is some craquelure to the black cat, the sea and the trousers of the figure second from left, with some associated lifting and very small flecks of loss to the aforementioned figure's right leg, and some very fine, isolated further lines of craquelure to the rest of the work. There are two scuffs to the blue pigment towards the top of the right vertical edge, with some associated losses, a scuff to the black cat, and a horizontal scuff to the trousers of the leftmost figure. There is some rubbing to the lower horizontal edge of the work, and some losses to the thicker areas of pigment at the right vertical edge. There is some light surface dirt in places. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition.
Ultraviolet light reveals a spot of retouching to the yellow funnel of the boat. There are also some areas of fluorescence which are thought to be in keeping with the artist's materials.
The work is float mounted and presented in a painted wooden frame.
