Original canvas. The canvas undulates slightly in places but otherwise appears sound. There is some light wear and rubbing to the canvas in places, most apparent in the upper right quadrant and in the cream pigment in the lower half of the work. There are some very small losses in places, most apparent to the cream pigment. There is a horizontal line of craquelure, with associated loss, in the upper right quadrant, with some further smaller spots of craquelure in this area. There is a spot of craquelure and some associated flecks of loss towards the left side of the horizontal edge underneath the horse. Upon extremely close inspection, it is possible to seem some very fine lines of craquelure to some of the thicker areas of impasto in places, with one or two very fine, isolated lines of craquelure elsewhere. There is a small pressure mark to cream pigment just above the centre of the left vertical edge. There is some light surface dirt across the work. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals some areas of fluorescence at the lower edge, which correspond to the aforementioned losses in this area, and a few spots along the extreme left edge, which are indicative of retouching. There are some further areas of fluorescence, which are thought to be in keeping with the artist's materials. The work is presented in a simple wooden frame.
