Condition

Original canvas. The canvas undulates slightly in places, and there are stretcher lines apparent around the edges of the work, most apparent along the upper horizontal and right vertical edges, with some associated scuffs and lifting at the lower right vertical edge. There is some scattered craquelure to the work with some small, scattered losses in places, most apparent in the lower right quadrant. There is a slight spot of lifting to the green leaves near the centre of the work. There is a scratch measuring approximately 2.5cm near the centre of the upper horizontal edge with some associated paint loss, and there are some further smaller scratches apparent to the surface of the work in places. There is a very small pressure mark apparent in the upper right quadrant. There is some surface dirt apparent to the work. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in good overall condition. Ultraviolet light reveals one small spot of retouching just right of centre along the upper horizontal edge. The work is presented in a simple wooden frame with a gilt slip. Catalogue Note

'I like the juxtaposing of unrelated elements ... the idea of the zebra came from a Moghul miniature and it has appeared in several of my paintings' (Mary Fedden, quoted in The Artist, March 1955, p.10).
