Catalogue Note

A renowned calligrapher, Chen Guangwu creates a new vision for traditional forms. He diligently practices calligraphy as a form of meditation, an ancient practice that harkens back to copying religious and philosophical texts. Facsimile Wang Xizhi (LOT 580) is an introspective tribute to the Sage of Calligraphy, Wang Xizhi (303-361 CE) and a contemporary interpretation of the traditional understanding of Chinese script as visual poetry.

Born in Liuzhou, Guangxi Province, in 1967, Chen Guangwu currently lives and works in Beijing. His works have been exhibited around the world in museums, including the Berlin State Museum, Kunstmuseum Bern, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, and Today Art Museum, Beijing.
