Catalogue Note
Fang Jun's softly-lit landscapes and rich natural colours recall the grandeur of Southern Song Dynasty Paintings. He does not paint imagined scenes. Rather his work comes from memories of his hometown in Jiangsu province - a rustic China that is rapidly disappearing. In Fang's landscapes bridges span streams, pine trees stand tall, whitewashed buildings nestle at the base of lush hills and all appears fresh after the rain. As art historian Lang Shaojun notes, Fang Jun's paintings "evoke a realm in which poetry functions like painting and painting like poetry."1
Fang Jun is known as one the best landscape painters of his generation and a member of the New Literati of Nanjing. His ties to this rich cultural center go back to the 1960s when he studied Chinese Painting at Nanjing Normal University and later received a master's degree from Nanjing Art Academy.
