Literature
M.G. Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his Sons, Doornspijk 1993, vol. I, p. 452, cat. no. H20, reproduced vol. II, fig. H25.
ENGRAVED
By Cornelis Bloemart the Younger (1606–1684; reversed, with variations).
Condition
The canvas is relined, the paint surface is clean, and the varnish is clear and even. There is retouching to a small vertical tear to the left of the figure's proper right shoulder, measuring approx. 5 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a rather milky varnish, beneath which it is difficult to discern other intervention, but there appears to be a very small area of retouching on the upper left side of the figure's forehead, and another very small patch, less than 1 square cm., just above the sitter's other shoulder. The painting is otherwise in very good condition.
