Description
- Pietà
- oak, with a velvet covered wood base
- Southern Netherlandish, probably Brabant, circa 1500
Condition
Overall the condition of the wood is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. A former layer of polychromy has probably been removed, and some very minor traces of polychromy are found in areas such as the underside of the Virgin's veil and some of the crevices. There are a few minor losses, notably to: three of the fingers of the Virgin's proper right hand, the tip of the index finger of the Virgin's proper left hand, the little finger of Christ's proper left hand, and the tip of the index finger of Christ's proper right hand. There is also a loss to Christ's proper right foot, and some losses to the bottom right corner of the terrasse. Christ's fingers of the proper left hand, the Virgin's proper left thumb, and Christ's proper left arm (in two places) have been reattached, and some glue residue is visible around the joints. A section of Christ's lower proper left leg is carved separately and may be a replacement; the joint at the ankle is slightly uneven. There is some stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, notably open splits to the top of the Virgin's head and to Christ's proper right ankle and foot. There is some rubbing at the high points, particularly to Christ's nose. A section of the terrasse on the proper right side is carved separately. Two sections of the back on each side are also carved separately. There is some evidence of past worming to the wood, notably at the sides and the back. There are several small holes, one with a wood plug, on the reverse.
The velvet covered base is in good condition with some general wear, including some fraying to the fabric.
