Description
- Standing Christ Child
- polychromed wood, on a polychromed wood base
- Netherlandish, Malines, or Spanish, 16th century
Condition
Overall the condition of the wood is good, with minor wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. An earlier layer of polychromy that had clearly flaked in areas has been overpainted. This overpainting may possibly conceal some restorations or reattachments. There are a few partially filled minor losses, probably due to past worming, to the back of the head and neck. There is some wear to the polychromy of the base, whose gilding has largely rubbed. The polychromy has flaked and been overpainted in areas; notably there is a small area of loss to the polychromy on the right side of the base.

Catalogue Note
Figures such as this were popular in Malines during the late 15th and 16th centuries; compare a Christ Child in the Rijksmuseum (inv. no. R.B.K. 1971-114). The appearance of the base of the present figure suggests that this example may have been made for the Spanish market.
