Description

  • Hercules slaying a centaur and Nessus and Deianeira
  • gilt and polychromed wood, on ornate ebonised wood bases
  • After models by Giambologna (1529-1608) Italian, probably Florence, 18th century

Condition

Overall the condition of the groups is good, with some wear and dirt to the surfaces consistent with age. There is some wear to the gilding, revealing the red ground in areas. There are also a few minor losses to the gilding, including to Nessus' proper right front leg in the Deianeira group, and the polychromy of the terrasses and bases has flaked slightly in areas. There is some stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, notably to both terrasses and bases, and around Nessus's neck and shoulder in the Deianeira group. Deianeira's proper right arm and proper right breast are carved separately, and joints are slightly visible. Deianeira's proper right thumb is lost. There are several light nicks and scratches to both groups. There is particular wear to the high points of the carved bases. There is some evidence of past worming, in particular to the bases.
