Description

  • Cassone
  • polychromed wood
  • Italian, Florence, early 16th century
centred by an unidentified coat of arms

Provenance

Finarte Milano, 16 December 1999, lot 796

Condition

Overall the condition of the cassone is good, with some wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The feet are later replacements. There is evidence of past worming which has led to some losses, in particular to the lid and to the front left edge. There is some stable splitting to the wood consistent with the material, in particular around the sides. There are losses to the polychromy on the lid, as well as some retouching. There are original stable joints, and a few losses, to the wood at the back. The cassone rocks backwards when opened. The velvet lining on the inside is probably later. There is some wear to it, including fraying.
