Condition

Overall the condition of the sgabelli is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The chairs are the result of highly skilled work in the replacement of original elements from one or more restored sgabelli from the 16th century, combined with newly made elements based on antique models. One has a restored original backrest; the second has a period front (with restored lion paw feet); the third has an original seat; while the fourth appears to be a complete revival (circa late 19th or early 20th century). It appears that parts of old furniture have been reused to create the replaced elements. There is some evidence of non-active worming; some of this is part of a highly skilled effort (probably in the late 19th century or early 20th century) to assimilate the later elements to the original parts. There is a loss to the bottom right corner of one of the backrests (probably the original example). There are several nicks and scratches.

Catalogue Note

These superb sgabelli follow Renaissance models. They appear to have been executed by a leading furniture maker circa 1900, and incorporate a 16th-century back and a 16th-century front support. A pair of sgabelli in the same style are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. 5690-1859).
