Catalogue Note

Very few portrait chargers of this large size and early date appear to be recorded. A closely similar dish, perhaps even by the same hand, was previously in the J. Pierpoint Morgan and Mortimer Schiff collections, then the Dr. Bak collection and was offered for sale at Sotheby's London, 7th December 1965, lot 31. A further dish of similar large size attributed to Faenza and painted with a youth is published by J. Giacomotti, Catalogue des majoliques des musées nationaux, Paris 1974, p. 32, no. 10 and B. Rackham, Italian Maiolica, London 1952, pl. 15.
