Catalogue Note

The theme of the world gone topsy-turvy was a long-standing one, with Egyptian and Mesopotamian forerunners; subjects included rivers flowing backwards, lambs lying down with wolves, and asses making music. A plate with a similar subject dated and signed '1528/ .M.G.' is in the Wallace Collection, London.
