Catalogue Note

Another polychromed stucco version of this beautiful composition, though without the surrounding angels, was published in the 1913 catalogue of the Berlin Museums (op. cit.), there described as related to the work of Donatello and Luca della Robbia. Stucco versions of reliefs by Florentine sculptors were produced widely and often polychromed in painters' workshops, the most prominent being that of Neri di Bicci. The splendid use of colour and the quality of the painted Angels in the present relief suggest an origin in his workshop. Compare a polychromed stucco relief by Neri di Bicci after Desiderio da Settignano (Bormand, op. cit.).
