Description
- Diptych Leaf
- ivory, with metal mounts
- French, 14th century
Provenance
Private collection, United Kingdom, since the 1980's
Condition
There is minor dirt and wear to the surface. There are stable splits running through the ivory, consistent with the material. It is possible (though unlikely) that two splits most visible to the reverse (lower left side and upper right side) are restored fractures. However, they are stable and they are probably merely splits. The right split has been stabilised with the use of tape, and painted restoration is visible to the obverse (to the left of the Crucifix). There are a few small chips, including to the upper edge on the left side and to the bottom right corner. There are lacunae and holes for hinges on the left side, and a metal hook to the top and a metal mount to the right side. Various glue and paint residues to the reverse and sides. Otherwise the condition is good.
