Description
- Group with the Deposition of Christ
- partially polychromed and gilt wood
- Southern Netherlandish, Brabant, early 16th century
Condition
Overall, the condition of the wood is good, with some dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The group is carved in two sections, and a joint is slightly visible running vertically through Christ's upper body at the front. The base is carved separately. There is minor stable splitting to the wood, constistent with the material, in particular to the base on the underside. The proper right hand of the man on the right is part lost. There are some chips and abrasions, including to the bottom edge, to the rims of the hats, and to the draperies, including to the drapery falling from the proper left arm of the man on the left. There is some rubbing to the wood at the high points, particularly to the faces and to Christ's arms and legs. There is some evidence of past worming, in particular to the area around Christ's knees, the drapery of the man on the right and at the reverse of the man on the right.
There is wear to the polychromy throughout, notably at the hight points. There are some losses, including to the faces, to the high points of the drapery of the man on the left, to the collar of the man on the right and to the bottom edge. There is a small loss to the sepulchre at the front.
