Condition

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The artist's board is secure. The paint surface is slightly uneven. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows an opaque varnish layer and no evidence of any retouchings. Overall the painting is in good condition. The work is framed.

This work is a preliminary study for Garrard's painting Mares and Foals from H.R.H. the Prince of Wales's Stud shown at the Royal Academy in 1793, no. 30 (according to two labels on the reverse).1
