Condition

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The panel is uncradled. The paint surface is uneven and has a slightly raised craquelure pattern, small areas of which are lifting. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows an extremely opaque and discoloured varnish layer making it not possible to see clearly retouchings which may be beneath these varnish layers. The painting appears to be in reasonably good condition. The work is framed.

Catalogue Note

The coat of arms in the upper left corner of this painting identify the sitter as a member of the Haselfoote family, most likely to be William Haselfoote, first son of Thomas Haselfoote of London, and grandson of John Haselfoote and Alice Pecocke (or Peacock). William Haselfoote was born in 1559 and married Maude, daughter of Francis Kynaston M.P., in 1587, the year this portrait was painted.

The Pecocke arms are first recorded in association with Sir Stephen Pecocke, Lord Mayor of London between 1532–33, and feature a peacock crest and peacock heads. When Sir Stephen's daughter, Alice, married John Haselfoote, these arms were combined with those of her husband's family – four lozenges joined in a cross, alternating in gold and black.
