Description

  • Bolognese School, 16th century
  • Portrait of a gentleman, half-length, identified as Giovanni II Bentivoglio (1443–1508)
  • inscribed upper right: IOANNES BENTIVLVS / SECVNDVS BONOSIS / PRINCEPS IVNIPERA VICECOMES / SFORTSA VXOR EIVS and charged with the arms of the sitter
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish has discoloured somewhat. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along all four margins and scattered throughout the background, particularly around the coat-of-arms and the inscription. There is also some scattered pinprick retouching around the sitter's eye and forehead, and strengthening in his hair. In overall good condition.
