Description
- Venetian School, 17th century
- Battle of the sea gods
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas is relined, the paint surface is quite dirty, and the varnish has discoloured somewhat. The canvas is rather worn in some areas, particularly centre, in the sky, and above the figures feasting. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching along all four margins. There is also retouching to some old tears: one vertical, measuring approx. 40cm., to the left of the figure raising a fish, left; another vertical, measuring approx. 30cm., above this figure's head; and a horizontal, measuring approx. 30cm., running from the right margin just above the head of the child, right. There is also retouching along two old folds or seams in the canvas, each about a third away from either margin. There are scattered areas of retouching throughout, most notably: in the rear of the female nude and the child, right; in the hands of the figure raising the fish; and in the body of the figure bending over, to his right. In overall fair condition.
