The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The painting has been lined. The paint surface is secure and has a relatively even varnish
layer. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows extensive retouchings mostly around the four framing edges, on the chest and around the head of Christ. There are fewer smaller reotuchings on his face. Overall the painting is in good condition. The painting is framed.

Catalogue Note
This composition derives from Murillo's painting formerly in the Francis Cook Collection, Richmond, which was conceived as a pendant with the Mater Dolorosa (present whereabouts unknown).1
