Condition
The canvas is unlined, but there are a number of canvas patches on the reverse. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There are two parallel lines in the canvas running horizontally and vertically through the centre, as well as evidence of the stretcher mark around the perimeter. There is quite a well-developed network of craquelure and some very small, pinprick losses throughout the paint surface. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very few scattered areas of retouching - the most notable, concentrated area is at the mouth of the river, centre left. Otherwise the painting is preserved in its original condition.
