  • Saint Louis IX of France with the Archangel Michael, in a landscape
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Collection of Don Juan Nepomucè Font i Sangrà;
By family descent to his niece Doña Ana Maria de Ros i Font;
Acquired by Ilustrísimo Señor Don Antonio d’Ortodó i Comas in June 1939;

Condition

The panel is made up of two vertical planks, supported by three horizontal batons on the reverse. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. There is a vertical fracture in the paint surface, measuring approx. 30 cm., upper centre, running through the Archangel's wing; and another much smaller crack in the paint surface running down from the upper margin above the Archangel's head, measuring approx. 5 cm. There is another vertical fracture, measuring approx. 20 cm., running from the centre of the lower margin (visible in the catalogue illustration). Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the small crack above the Archangel's head, and to the one running from the lower margin. There is otherwise no intervention, save for some small retouchings around Saint Louis' crown.
