Given by Mrs. Ashley of Ashby St. Ledgers to the Thornton family of Brockhall, Northamptonshire, circa 1780 (according to a label on the reverse);

Condition
The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is relatively clean, and the varnish is even and only slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some minor retouching in the sitter's right cheek and forehead, and in the lower right corner. There is otherwise no intervention and the painting is in overall very good condition.
