Description

  • Otto van Veen
  • The triumph of Wisdom over Fortune
  • inscribed lower right: Sapienzia Fortuna uictricx.
  • oil on oak panel

Condition

The panel is strengthened on the reverse with four small supporting batons, running horizontally from the upper right corner. There is also a baton which runs the width of the panel, approx. 7 cm. from the lower margin, supporting a repaired horizontal split. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the old split and some minor, very sensitively-executed strengthening to the blue in the figure of Wisdom's chest. There is otherwise almost no intervention and the painting is in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

The male figure in this work is identifiable as Hercules by his club. The Medusa shield he holds is the attribute of Minerva, goddess of wisdom, and the female figure is identifiable as Fortune by her cornucopia, thus bearing out the inscription, lower right.
