Description

  • Esaias van de Velde
  • A river landscape with elegantly-dressed figures on horseback in the foreground, monks and a shepherd with his flock beyond
  • dated lower right, on the rock: 1619
  • oil on oak panel, circular, the reverse with the red wax collection seal of Jean-Joseph Chapuis

Provenance

Jean-Joseph Chapuis (1765–1864), Brussels;
J. Herbrand, Paris, 1929;
Anonymous sale, London, Robinson, Fisher & Harding, 18 November 1937, lot 121 (as E. van der Velde).

Condition

The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is relatively clean, the colours are bright and well-preserved, and the varnish is even and only slightly discoloured. There is a superficial horizontal surface scratch across the legs of the wooden bridge, centre right (visible in the catalogue illustration). Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to this scratch but little other intervention, save for minimal scattered retouching in the foreground. In overall very good condition.
