Description

  • The Master of the Holy Blood
  • Death of Lucretia
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Rudolf Sandor, Berlin, 1935;
Eugen Meier, Berlin;
Prince Joseph Clemens of Bavaria (1902–1990), Munich;
Anonymous sale, Munich, Hampel, 16 July 2010, lot 448;
Anonymous sale, Cologne, Lempertz, 26 September 2010, lot 53.

Condition

The panel has been cradled and appears flat and stable. The paint surface is extremely dirty and the varnish is yellow. The thickness of the old varnish impedes examination under ultraviolet light, but restoration can be seen in several areas, notably around the central panel join running down from Lucretia's chin to her wrist, around the hand below, and to numerous details of the hair and costume. Offered in a reproduction parcel gilt wood frame.
