Catalogue Note
The sitter here is shown wearing a wig and costume which date from the late 1750s to the early 1760s. He is believed to be a member of the Money family, most probably Lt.-Col. James Money (1724–85), son of Francis Money (1696–1727) of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire and Elizabeth Washbourne (d. 1726). James Money inherited the Ernle and Kyrle estates of Whetham, Wiltshire and Homme House, Herefordshire, from his cousin Lady Constantia Dupplin upon her death in 1753. Money served as a Major in the 86th Regiment on the island of Gorée (Senegal) in 1760 and as Captain in Colonel Boscawen's 29th Regiment in 1764, before becoming Lieutenant-Colonel. He married Eugenia Stoughton (1730–88) and their only surviving son was William Money (1748–1808).
