Condition

The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The canvas appears unlined. There is a very small repaired tear in the lower left as viewed from the reverse. The canvas is slightly slack. The paint surface has an uneven varnish. There is a slightly raised pattern of craquelure and stretcher-bar lines with some scattered tiny paint losses. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows small scattered retouchings throughout the composition. Some retouchings are visible in natural light. Overall the painting is in good condition. The work is framed.

Catalogue Note

Civitavecchia, the principal seaport in Lazio, is built on the ancient site of the Roman port Centum Cellae, the harbour of which was planned under the Emperor Trajan's rule at the beginning of the second century. Lacroix painted another view of this port, Port of Civitavecchia with Pope Clement XII, signed and dated 1763, which was sold New York, Sotheby's, 15 January 1987, lot 89.
