Description
- Christian Georg Schütz the Elder
- A river landscape at sunset, with elegantly-dressed figures giving alms to a beggar
- oil on oak panel
- 38 by 82 cm.
Provenance
With Julius Böhler, Munich, from whom acquired by the present owner in 1963 (as Jean Pillement).
Condition
The support consists of two planks, joined horizontally - the top panel makes up the top third of the support. The panel is supported on the reverse by two vertical batons. The picture is in overall very good condition. The paint surface is stable, with a marginally discoloured varnish. The panel join is visible only at the right hand side of the paint surface and there are a handful of surface scratches but no major damages visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals only a handful of small scattered retouchings mainly in the sky, in the masonry at the right margin and in the hats of the figures in the central foreground.
This lot is offered in a carved gilt wood frame in good condition.
