Florentine School, 17th Century

Prior to recent cleaning, the figure of Saint Cecilia was shown wearing a white chemise beneath her dress, which was not original to the painting and was consequently removed. An almost identical work, attributed to Justus Sustermans includes the chemise (Stourhead, Wiltshire).¹ This may suggest that the present painting, in its previous state, served as a model for that version.
