Description
- Castilian School, 16th Century
- The Baptism of Christ
- oil on panel
Condition
The panel cradled, and the paint surface is secure with an only slightly discoloured varnish. The distinctive craquelure suggests that there may have been a degree of flaking, which is now been stabilised. The small losses causes by this have been retouched - the retouchings, scattered throughout, are now slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms these scattered retouchings throughout the panel surface, the main concentration of which are in the red of the Baptists cloak, in the torso of the figure of Christ and throughout the sky. The faces of the figures and the figure of God, the dove, and the details of the background have less intervention. Offered in a gold frame with lattice detailing at the top with only one or two losses.
