The canvas has a rather firm relining, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals several areas of retouching, which are largely very difficult to discern with the naked eye. Patches of retouching, each measuring approx. 3 by 2 cm., are found: between the horse's legs, in the sky above the skaters, right, in the upper right corner of the sky, and in the top of the sledge, left. There is a vertical line of retouching in the branches against the wall, left, and a horizontal line of retouching in the sky, upper right - both lines measure approx. 5 cm. There are other smaller scattered patches of retouching, most notably in the lower right corner and in the right-hand side of the sky. The right margin has also been retouched. Notwithstanding these interventions, the painting is in overall good condition.
