Description

  • Joris van Son
  • A 'pronk' still life of grapes, cherries, walnuts and a peeled lemon, with oysters on a pewter plate, and a glass roemer, wine glass and gilt goblet, all on a draped table
  • signed lower left: J. van. SON . f .
  • oil on oak panel

Provenance

With Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell, London (according to a mount in the Witt Library, London).

Condition

The panel is cradled, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There are scattered discoloured retouchings in the background, mostly along the horizontal grain of the wood, and scattered in the table cloth and on the surface of the table, left. The ground has become visible in some areas of the painting, particularly in the table cloth in the foreground. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a recent retouching to a tiny loss to the left of the bread roll and in the upper right corner, but it is difficult to discern previous restoration due to the milky varnish. In overall good condition. Offered in a carved and moulded gilt wood frame with a few minor losses.
