Description
- Follower of Joos van Cleve
- The Virgin and Child
- oil on oak panel, unframed
Condition
The panel is uncradled and very slightly bowed. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured and milky from the application of white spirit. Some areas of the paint surface are tenting a little, and there are several retouched losses (visible in the catalogue illustration): two small areas in the Virgin's halo, on her left shoulder and to the right of this, in the Christ Child's left foot and knee, two very small areas above His head, and in the upper left corner. These areas fluoresce under ultraviolet light, but otherwise the panel is largely untouched and the details of the figures' faces are very well preserved, despite scattered pinprick losses and retouching, particularly in the Child's right leg and arm, and the Virgin's right hand and left eye (all visible in the catalogue illustration). The blue of the Virgin's robe has also degenerated somewhat. In overall fair condition.
