Description

  • Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli
  • A lunette with a prophet
  • Pen and brown ink and wash, over traces of black chalk, the figure squared in black chalk

Provenance

Gift of Richeton, October 1927

Condition

Laid down on card. The sheet has discolored somewhat and there are some losses to the original sheet in the upper centre and right edge, as well as in areas to the centre, where the iron gall ink has begun to sink somewhat into the sheet. There are a few minor stains and areas of surface dirt. The image itself remains reasonably strong throughout.

Catalogue Note

Previously attributed to Domenico Beccafumi by A.E. Popham, this drawing in fact seems closer in style to the Parmese Mannerist, Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli.  No connection with a surviving lunette has, however, been identified.
