Catalogue Note

The present double-sided sheet is a fascinating preliminary study that would appear to relate to a more finished drawing by Urbino in the Louvre,1 which Giulio Bora has connected to the artist's fresco depicting the Adoration of the Virgin in the apse of the church of Santa Maria di Campagna in Pallanza.  For a detailed account of Urbino's work in Pallanza, see G. Bora, 'Un ciclo di affreschi, due artisti e una bottega a S. Maria di Campagna a Pallanza', Arte Lombarda, vol. 52 (1977), pp. 90-106.

We are grateful to Giulio Bora for confirming the attribution to Carlo Urbino and he believes this study to be also preparatory for the apse at Pallanza.
