Catalogue Note

From a set of originally 30 glasses, each finely painted with the coat-of-arms of the various universities and technical academies of the German empire. The set of glasses were part of a monumental carved wooden, marble, bronze, silver, enamelled and painted credence table with a beer pump mechanism, topped by a onyx obelisk with eagle, with a portrait of Bismarck and further decorated with sculptures and enamelled armorial shields, in total 375cm. high (fig.1). This important monument was specially commissioned by the body of students of Imperial Germany to honour Bismarck on occasion of his 80th birthday in 1895.
