Description

  • gilt bronze
  • 69cm. high; 2ft. 3¼in.
in the shape of a horn, cast with cherubs and female figures, the vessel decorated with elaborate Mannerist patterns, on an ebonised wood base

Provenance

Bismarck Museum Schönhausen, inv. nr.  F I Wgd. 225. 

This vessel was a personal gift of the German Emperor Wilhelm I to Bismarck.

Condition

In overall good condition. The bronze would benefit from a light clean. The winged putto is slightly loose and has been re-attached once. The ebonised base has marks of woodworm which seems to be no longer active. The base has marks and scratches consistent with age and use.
