Condition

The canvases are unlined and the paint surfaces are dirty, with discoloured varnishes. There is a strongly-defined network of craquelure throughout both portraits, which are in fair condition. Her: There are several small paint losses, largely in the background around the sitter's head. The area to the right of the sitter is stable, but looks prone to flaking. There is a dent in the canvas along the stretcher mark, upper centre. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an uneven varnish and much surface dirt, but little other restoration, save for two areas of retouching, upper right. Him: There are several small paint losses, largely in the background above the sitter's head, and also in his shoulder and on his sleeve. Ultraviolet light reveals restoration to the flaking above the sitter's head and retouching to other small areas of paint loss along the lower right margin, the lower right corner, and to the left of the sitter's head.
