Condition

The board appears sound. There are nail heads visible around the edges, with some associated cracking in places and some flecks of loss, most apparent to the lower left edge. There are losses to both the lower corners of the board, and there are some minor scuffs to the extreme edges of the board. There are some small losses to some of the impasto tips in places. There is some light surface dirt and some small scuffs in places. There is a tiny spot of gold framing paint underneath the yellow leaf on the right. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition, with strong passages of impasto throughout. Ultraviolet light reveals no obvious signs of fluorescence or retouching. The work is presented in a painted wooden frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Catalogue Note

'Since March 1952, Alan Reynolds has scored one of the most phenomenal successes of recent years in four exhibitions at the Redfern Gallery...Reynolds is that rarity among painters - he sees and paints what most of us have seen and felt in landscapes; that we accept the truth in his personal idiom is a measure of the communication in his art because it, unlike much of today's painting, remains in communication with Nature.' (G. S. Whittet, Studio, August 1954)
