Description

  • Lucian Freud, O.M., C.H.
  • Portrait of John Craxton
  • pen and ink, charcoal and crayon
  • 27 by 20cm.; 10½ by 8in.

Provenance

A gift from the artist to E. Q. Nicholson, and thence by descent to the present owner

Condition

Not examined out of the frame. The sheet appears to be displayed between two mounts. There is a small cut-out rectangle in the bottom right corner visible to the reverse of the sheet. There is a very slight imperfection to the sheet along the right vertical edge, thought to be in keeping with the artist's working materials and only visible upon very close inspection, but otherwise the sheet appears sound. There is some light surface dirt and studio detritus in places. There may be one or two tiny spots of foxing, only visible upon extremely close inspection. There is a minor possible old repaired tear, only visible to the upper left hand side of the reverse of the sheet. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition. The sheet is window mounted to both sides and is displayed in a gilded and painted wooden frame. There is glass to both sides of the frame. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.
