Condition

The sheet is fully laid down to a backing card. The sheet has been unevenly cut to the extreme edges, not visible in the present mount, and there is old glue-staining visible to the extreme edges of the sheet, again, not visible in the present mount. There is some old mount staining visible to the sheet, with a couple of small scattered traces of light foxing, only visible upon very close inspection. There are one of two tiny traces of possible studio detritus, but this excepting the work appears in excellent overall condition, with strong, vivid colour throughout. Housed behind glass in a thick painted wooden frame. Please contact the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Catalogue Note

The 1965 Tate retrospective exhibition dates the present work to circa 1917 and notes that it may have been completed while Roberts was still on active service and before he became an Official War Artist. It was likely signed and dated retroactively by the artist at some point after 1965.
